Buying guide
Which straightener suits you? Our stylists' buying guide
Not a top ten full of affiliate links, but the advice we give in our own salon: by hair type, with the right temperature, and honest about what each tool does and doesn't do.
Find your match
Start with your hair, not with the tool
The difference between a great and a mediocre result rarely comes down to the brand. It comes down to the model that suits your hair and the temperature you work at.
-
Fine or thin hair
Fine hair straightens quickly and gets damaged just as quickly. Use the lowest setting that does the job and pass through each section once, slowly.
-
Normal hair
Your hair does what you ask, so choose for convenience. The V+ remembers your setting and fights frizz with vibration. The Tourmaline Straightening Brush is there for the mornings when a straightener feels like too much effort.
-
Thick, coarse or unruly hair
Force won't help here, the right temperature will. Work in sections of no more than four centimetres. If you need more than two passes over the same section, the setting is too low.
Our advice
One Touch Stripes Straightener
Temperature 220 °C
-
Curly or coily hair
Blow-dry completely first, because water under a hot plate turns into steam inside the hair shaft. Then one slow pass per section. Prefer a softer, naturally straight look with less heat? The Air Straightener dries and straightens in one step.
-
Hair extensions
We work with extensions in the salon every day. Choose a lower temperature and stay a few centimetres away from the bonds. Extensions don't produce natural oils, so heat protection is not a luxury here.

Expertise
What should you look for in a straightener?
Seven things that make the difference in the salon, and where our own stylers stand.
-
Plate material
Ceramic spreads heat evenly and is forgiving. Tourmaline is a mineral that releases negative ions when heated; you usually find it as a coating. Titanium heats up fast and stays hot: great for thick hair, less so for fine hair. At Ogé, the V+ uses tourmaline heating, the One Touch Stripes 24-carat gold with silicone stripes, and the 32 mm Curling Iron a ceramic coating.
-
Adjustable temperature
The most important point on this list. Fine hair needs no more than 180 °C, thick hair asks for 220 °C. A single fixed setting is therefore too hot or too cool for one of them. A digital setting you can read takes the guesswork out.
-
Ions
Negative ions remove static charge from your hair. You notice it as less frizz and more shine, especially with dry or thick hair.
-
Plate width
Narrow plates get close to the roots and are handy for short hair, fringes and curls. Wide plates work faster through long, thick hair. Rounded edges make it easier to create waves with a straightener too.
-
Heat-up time
Fast heat-up is nice, but what matters more is that a straightener holds its temperature as you pass through a thick section. The One Touch Stripes reaches 220 °C in ten seconds.
-
Auto shut-off
A safety feature you only appreciate when you're out and wondering whether you unplugged it. The V+ goes to sleep after five minutes and switches off after thirty, the curling iron after one hour.
-
Warranty and service
Check how long the warranty is and how easy it is to claim. With us, every device has a 12-month warranty, your order confirmation counts as proof of purchase, and you get answers from a small team in the Netherlands that uses the products themselves.
Air or plates
Air Straightener or classic straightener?
Two ways to get straight hair, each with its own strength.
Choose the Air Straightener if
- your hair is still wet in the morning: the wet mode at 80 °C dries and straightens in one step
- you want less heat: 160 °C at most, with no hot plates pressing your hair flat
- you prefer a naturally straight look with volume over a glassy finish
- you have fine hair or extensions
- you want to set your style with a cool shot button
Choose a straightener if
- you want the smoothest, glossiest result
- your hair is thick, coarse or coily and needs 220 °C
- you also want to curl with the same tool (the One Touch Stripes)
- your hair is already dry and you only want to touch it up
- you want sleek hair that lasts all evening
Our advice from the salon: the Air Straightener for every day, straight from wet hair, and a straightener for the evening when it has to be sleek.
An honest comparison
Ogé or a premium brand like ghd or Dyson?
ghd and Dyson make excellent tools. The question isn't which brand is best, but what you get for your money.

Temperature
Which temperature for your hair?
Always start at the lowest setting that does the job. One slow pass at the right temperature gives more shine and less damage than five quick ones at a setting that is too high.
| Hair type | Straightener | 32 mm curling iron |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged hair | 180 °C | 160 °C |
| Fine, thin or blonde hair | 180 °C | 180 °C |
| Normal hair | 200 °C | 200 °C |
| Thick, coarse or unruly hair | 220 °C | 220 °C |
| Hair extensions | Lower, away from the bonds | |
The Air Straightener works with warm air, not plates: 80 °C in wet mode, 120, 140 or 160 °C for dry styling.
Questions
Questions about choosing a straightener
Which straightener is best for curly or coily hair?
The One Touch Stripes at 220 °C. The plates with 24-carat gold and silicone stripes let the section glide through in a single pass, and with curly hair a single pass is the difference between smooth and damaged. Blow-dry your hair completely first and work in sections of no more than four centimetres.
What is the difference between a tourmaline and a ceramic straightener?
Ceramic provides even heat. Tourmaline also releases negative ions when heated, which counter static and frizz. Tourmaline is usually a coating over another base, so it isn't a choice between one or the other. The V+ Straightener and the Tourmaline Straightening Brush both use tourmaline.
Is an air straightener better for your hair than a flat iron?
It works with less heat: the Air Straightener goes up to 160 °C and has no hot plates, whereas a straightener goes up to 220 °C. That is gentler on fine hair and extensions. The result is naturally straight rather than glassy. For thick or coily hair, a straightener is often more effective.
What temperature should I set my straightener to?
180 °C for fine, thin, blonde or damaged hair, 200 °C for normal hair and 220 °C for thick, coarse or unruly hair. If you need more than two passes over the same section, the setting is too low.
Is Ogé a good alternative to ghd?
If you want to choose the temperature yourself, yes. The ghd Platinum+ works at a fixed 185 °C and comes with a 3-year warranty, for a recommended retail price of € 299 (ghdhair.com/nl, October 2026). The One Touch Stripes is digitally adjustable to 180, 200 or 220 °C. It is tested in our own salon, has a 12-month warranty and costs less.
How long is the warranty on an Ogé straightener?
12 months on every device, from the day you receive it. Your order confirmation counts as proof of purchase; keep the original box as well.
